From the art room...

Portrait, Volume 3 (Colour)

“I shall praise those faces which seem to project out of the picture as though they were sculptured, and I shall censure those faces in which I see no art but that of outline.” (Leon Battista Alberti)

Thinking about portraits for yesterday’s post led me to some interesting quotes on the art of seeing and representing faces…  The quote above about the art of outline seemed to create an interesting question about another portrait series where the faces, reduced to outline and tints/shades of colour, have great depth and visual impact.  What do you think?

“With all the difficulties involved in painting, you still have to find a subject’s thoughts and intellectual world.” (Phan Ke An)

  1. Stella and I just critiqued the pictures, she thinks the colours and the direction of the lines are very expressive. We talked about each one and how she felt the person was feeling, purple was always the best.
