Pisa to Genoa…

Guess where we are today? We woke in Firenze and had breakfast again in the garden courtyard. (Warm chocolate croissants and made to order cappuccino – delicious. ) Suitably fortified, we drove across a short stretch of Tuscany to Pisa,  loving the view of rolling hills and farmhouses along the way…

Definitely…Pisa.  And yes – the tower is definitely leaning.

Pisa was a surprise – full of tourists but still charming. The leaning campanile is fun to see, but the entire complex at the Piazza Miracoli- basilica, baptistry and surrounding gardens – is gorgeous altogether.  We wandered around with the other roving hordes of dazzled tourists and tried to capture the feeling of wow by camera… a tricky business!

I love the contrast of these buildings behind the Capitoline wolf on her pedestal – is this a reminder that Pisa was already an old city during the rule of the ancient Romans?

After viewing the tower from every angle we wandered deeper into the town in search of gelato (of course!)  One chocolate chip, one anguria (watermelon) and a short rest on some church steps to regroup…  Then onwards to investigate the actual town of Pisa.

(What do you think this lion is so worried about?)  After thoroughly investigating as much as we had time for, we headed north to Liguria and the evolving view: a series of tiny hilltop towns, colourful houses and steep cliffs, plus peekaboo views of the Mediterranean (actually the Ligurian) Sea…

One missed highway exit led to a surprise detour through Genoa – we must get back there next time for a proper visit as it looks absolutely beautiful – it is ornate like Salzburg, but somehow completely Italian…

Genoa will have to wait for another visit though, as we are on our way north to the lakes for a sentimental visit…
