Firenze… Il Secondo

IMG_2479

We woke up bright and early to another beautiful day.  The weather was warm and sunny but there was no sign of the mosquitos we had been warned about – hooray!  The hotel is amazing.  It is the perfect combination of casual and quirky – just the way we like it.  We had our breakfast outside in the garden – homemade cappuccino and fresh warm chocolate croissants plus meat and cheese and yogourt and fruit… These breakfasts are another European tradition I am happy to adopt.

Afterwards we walked back into the city, taking advantage of the early start.

Every inch of Florence is beautiful (we have photographic records to prove it!) but our mission was to head straight to Santa Maria del Fiore to see Brunelleschi’s lifetime achievement – it is as amazing as every book and photo shows.  Three cameras were hard at work to capture just a tiny bit of it:

(Three cameras all taking pictures of the same incredible subject – can you guess who took which ones?)  After reluctantly turning our backs on the façade of Santa Maria and the baptistery we followed the enticing sounds of a brass band and came across this scene:

…a period re-enactment of marching Florentines.  They were incredibly serious about their roles – one oblivious tourist cut through the parade and took a punch for his foolishness.  Not for the faint of heart!

Our next stop was to see the porcellino in the Mercato Nuovo before moving on to Santa Maria Novella…

and then finally a tiny gelateria (limone, pistachio, cioccolato, fragola, plus some seriously delicious iced coffee slush served in teensy tiny cups!)

Here is our collection of Florentine door knockers – a new family scavenger hunt item!

Of course these door knockers are only possible because of the incredible abundance of doors

…and taking pictures of doors always leads to windows…

…until we were worn out and exhausted and could do nothing more than head back to the hotel for a shower and a nap to avoid the heat of the afternoon. (This is the best thing about staying right in a city – we can rest and then go in search of adventure all over again in an hour or two.  Check back for the rest of our Florentine story – we hope you are enjoying it as much as we are!)
