Ferrari Pilgrimage: Maranello…

IMG_2329

A huge day on the travel front:  we left Croatia at dawn and were quickly through Slovenia and into Italy – our adopted home region of Friuli Venezia-Giulia.  We drove straight on through the Veneto, across the tiniest piece of Lombardy and then into Emilia-Romagna for the greatest of automotive pilgrimages: Maranello.

This tiny town in northern Italy is home to the Ferrari Factory…

(last time we were here we narrowly avoided running into Rubens Barrichello in the parking lot… true story!)

I loved Italian cars long before I loved an Italian man – I was the dedicated (and impoverished) owner of a 1975 Fiat 124 Sport Spider years before I married my own mechanic.  (Poor planning!)  The Fiat Spider was designed by Tom Tjaarda who contributed to the Ferrari 275 GTS… that long nose and short body style still makes my heart race!

As much as I love old cars and automotive engineering, my enthusiasm does not compare to that of my handsome husband.

On my first trip to Italy we made the trip to Maranello to visit he Ferrari factory and museum, and this time we had the chance to bring our children along for the fun.

Everyone has their own favourites…

…but playing favourites is actually impossible.  Who (besides Jay Leno) has this many endlessly beautiful functional sculptures in the garage?

I lean towards the classics…

but am still a sucker for the FF… (the perfect family car?)

As gorgeous as these cars are, and as lovely as it is to dream, they are not really part of a young family’s budget.  Until the day that changes I will have to make do with pictures, and maybe one day my lucky number will come up…
