Venezia…Il Canal Grande

Venice!  Of all the places we have visited, Venice has been (and still is) an incredible influence…

…and seems to have influenced my children just the same:

I have been several times – this was my fourth visit – but I have never been able to see as much as I think I will – for such a tiny place there are (seemingly) infinite ways to wind your way through …

This time I was determined to see as much as possible (allowing for the needs of our three generations travelling together…) and fulfilled my big dream of sailing down the Grand Canal…

We boarded a vaporetto at Piazzale Roma and rode it all the way to San Marco…

…and photographed the entire length of the canal along the way…

This canal trip was one of the most exciting adventures of our holiday – the canal traffic, the business of life, the joy of the other passengers and the wonder of my children made for more fun than I ever imagined.

Best discovery of the trip:  Miss G. has an eye for photography and took some of the best shots of our day:

Best moment of the boat ride:

G.Jr, wearing his captain’s hat proudly, stood at the rails of the vaporetto and watched over the comings and goings on the canal with great ceremony, shouting out (to the entertainment of the other passengers) “Gondola!  Gondola!  Gondola, gondola, gondola, gondola, gondola, gondola, gondolaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…”

  1. So enjoying the pictures, especially Miss G’s. She definitely has an eye!! Love the flowers, I am missing my geraniums as I have dug them all up and put them to sleep for the winter.
