Places to Go

Grisignana…

One of our favourite memories from our last European holiday was a visit to the tiny hilltop town of Grisignana with friends.  We were lucky enough to be there during the annual summer jazz festival, and we enjoyed ourselves so much that we were excited about the chance to see it again this time around.

Grisignana is one of several medieval hilltop towns in Istria that has existed since before recorded history, but it appears on the “books” sometime around 1100.  From the front of the church there is a lovely view across the olive groves and vineyards all the way to the Adriatic sea, but the day we planned to visit the view was amazing in a completely different way…

The weather was torrential but warm, and so we headed out optimistically. (We are from Vancouver – rain will never scare us!)

Our reward for the effort was an almost empty town which made it so much easier to capture by camera. At times it felt like we were the only ones there in the world…

Grisignana actually only has about eighty residents, but every summer the International Association of Musical Youth holds a music school, master competitions and a great jazz fest too so that the little town is flooded with visitors.

Another reward for being early was the sound of musicians rehearsing for concerts – listening to an instrument played without the inhibitions of performance or the structure of composition creates an intimate soundtrack for personal exploration…

Even though there are only eighty townspeople there are more than forty art galleries or studios.  Visitors come to stroll from shop to shop to watch artists at work or talk with them about their crafts in an incredibly inspiring historical setting…

Being in a town created by and catering to artists and musicians is a gift for all the senses and completely inspiring – we can’t wait to get home and work on our own creations!

As it was, we managed to capture an incredible assortment of scenic pictures…

Family, music, art, history – all the most wonderful things in one place…  we are so grateful for the chance to see so much of the world, and so happy to share it with you!
