Places to Go

Westminster Quay

The days are starting to lighten and brighten. As people who live in a rainy city, we are driven to get out into the sun and fresh air when we can – there are so many places to go and things to see! I spent much of my childhood in New Westminster, but these days I only get to visit.
There are some wonderful places to go with a family in tow – we took advantage of the not-rain and headed to the old quay – now the river market. First we strolled along the boardwalk from the parking lot…

The stream of dreams marks the path to the market…

Along the way we passed the world’s tallest tin soldier, a painted dolphin, and a repurposed old tugboat – the walk was like living in a game of “I spy”!

One quick stop to admire the wildlife…

Ta da! The new market… something for everyone…

We stopped for lunch at Wally’s burgers. (Yummy!) You will probably remember the original – on Kingsway at Renfrew – just a block away from our old house in east van… Now reincarnated and still delicious. And messy. Get extra napkins.

Still so much to see! We might have shopped but with two kids along for fun we decided to head out into the fresh air. Time to see the paddle wheeler, some tugboats, Simon Fraser himself, and assorted river business…

And then on to the park…

We had so much fun just hanging around – some days are meant for that, don’t you think?

A slip,
A thing,
A sheeted space between
Some distant
Image fading.
Long veiled lines, a
Hand drawn blind or
Stretch of shade in
Darkened glass…

(Tonight’s poem inspired by the “spirit of childhood”… A glimpse into history at the pier park…)
